Blacksburg's newest downtown destination is doing double duty. 'The Local,' which opened October 14 at 414 North Main Street, is both a retail incubator giving emerging entrepreneurs affordable storefront space and structured support, and a multi-use community hub with a café, rentable event space, and a visitor information center. The project, a partnership between the Town of Blacksburg and Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. (DBI), repurposes the former Cook's Cleaners site to energize the North Main Street corridor.

Blacksburg Unveils 'The Local': A Dual-Purpose Hub for Retail and Community

The Town of Blacksburg announced the incubator as part of its ongoing effort to revitalize the heart of town, aiming to support emerging retail entrepreneurs, increase foot traffic, and enhance the downtown experience for residents, students, and visitors. The space offers flexible, low-cost retail space alongside comprehensive business development support for startups and expanding local retailers.

"Retail businesses bring energy and character to our downtown," Mayor Leslie Hager-Smith said in the town's announcement. "By supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners, this incubator will help create a dynamic mix of shops and experiences that serve both residents and visitors—making downtown a more exciting and engaging destination for everyone."
